Well I went to the dealer and yes, it is the door valve. They want 1300 to repair. I called GM and they said they will not help. They said no else is having a problem. Please call 800 222 1020 if you are having a problem. If enough call we might get it fixed. I am looking for some place to do it cheaper.

A little bad publicity will always work with these big company Since this problem seems to be quite big I would go if I had this problem bt it is my father that is having this problem and I will suggest it to him also. If he does I will have him post the number of the reporter so you guys can contact them. Another thing is maybe it is time to look at a lawyer on this.

2006 Equinox heater not working. Isn't this supposed to be the last thing to break. I've never heard of any car's heater not working, and never had this problem in any of my other cars. Maybe because all of my other cars were Japanese made.

Got mine fixed yesterday...be sure to check several dealerships the price can vary. The dealer I bought my car from wanted 1600 I got it done at another for 686 dollars. I got a 50/50 split from GM and ended up paying 343 out the door.

I think I am number 500 on this list……this is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS and GM should issue a recall today (avg $900 to fix)...especially for the 2006 NOX....mine started about a year ago and my mechanic found a loose wire in the left kick panel connector,(red/white wire), this is the main power for the heater/ac control (fan)....worked until about 2 weeks ago when I discovered the heater did not work...talked to my mechanic yesterday (11/5) and said the wire was fine(prev fixed), said the heater pipes were getting hot, but not warming the air…..Under the dash on the passenger side, said he could see the “door”, but could not actuate it…..he’s looking into it more.

I decided to google and found this forum….

Does any one think this could be a class action suit?? ANY LAWYERS HERE???

This article is being written from recent experience I had with a GM vehicle as well as some research into this issue to learn just how far reaching it is.
I would like to bring to your attention a problem that needs attention regarding a on going issue with GM and hundreds of it’s customers that own some GM products. This issue has been ignored/sidestepped by GM since 2006 and continues today as this article is being published.
The problem is the heater doors in these vehicles is a faulty design that WILL break not may break but will. This is a safety issue at this time of the year if someone is away from home and it breaks they have no way to defrost there windshield which can lead to accidents.
The problem is the actuating motor over extending the actuating arm of the heater door that causes stress in the plastic the result is failure of the heater door (breakage)(heater/AC exchange door). This is a design flaw not a wear and tear issue GM knows about it and has ignored it and they even have the gull to try and get the consumer to assume part of the responsibility for it.
If one contacts GM PR offices on this issue the first thing they are told is “You could have purchased a EXTRA warrantee to cover such things”. A warrantee to cover a badly designed component that’s absurd. If you persist in this they then will have you take the vehicle to the dealer to verify the issue then try to make a deal to split the repair cost that can be from $500.00 to $1000.00 labor for a $30.00 plastic part that was designed by GM this also is ridiculous. They try to compare it to balls joint and tie rods breaking which is an insult to ones intelligence the two do not compare what so ever.

Ball joint and other parts fail because of wear and tear that is an expected issue at some point in the life of the automobile. The heater problem is a design issue even GM can not predict when it will fail it could break the very first time it is used or it may go on for a couple years before failure it isn’t a matter of if or it could possibly fail but when will it fail. Even after the broken piece is repaired the issue of when is still there it can break again at any point in time then you will be faced with the same cost again. Since the consumer has no hand in designing this component GM bares all responsibility for it. You will be also told that this is a “common problem issue that is why there has not been a recall”. A common problem issue that’s to say the least and they see no need to recall and fix the problem.
The person I spoke with at GM tried to assure me that once GM fixes this issue it would not reinstall the same type of parts the problem would no longer exists. When I asked him Has Gm started to address this yet since it is ongoing since at least 2006 he told me no they have no plans to that he knows of.
There are hundreds of owners that have or had this exact issue. You can see complaints filed with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) web sight as well as people on forms all over the net.
The only resolution to this is a forced recall or a mass boycott of all GM products that uses this faulty component in there product line, since GM will not do what is right and step up to fix this problem .
They need to stop the continued practice of trying to get the consumer to bare some responsibility and cost to repair the issue, since they created it and knowingly installed a badly designed component in there products in the first place.
All of this just confirms the talk of GM quality taking a nose drive for the past couple years. It seems the talk on the net is true GM has gone down hill fast.
I was a GM customer most of my life but now I say lets drop GM and Support Ford.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? The a/c works fine.
I have a 2006 Chevy Equinox and my air temperature blend door has failed.

This is a manufacturer's defect. The problem impacts the ability of the car to defrost. As noted in a letter from GM's Director of Product Investigations and Safety to the NHTSA on December 23, 2009, the 2010 Equinox was recalled since a manufacturer’s defect resulted in non-operational defrost systems that was a safety concern, could result in a crash, and violated federal motor vehicle safety standard 103. In other words, GM has admitted on another vehicle that manufacturer’s defects that cause in-operable defrost systems are their responsibility to replace.
Just to update

I have contacted transport Canada and pursued the appropriate action to have the 2006 Chevy Equinox recalled for safety reasons on the advice of Janee from GM's Customer service.
I will also pursue an investigation and potential class action based on accidents that may have been a result of this issue if Transport Canada and GM fail to take timely action.

As winter approaches, the safety of Chevrolet Equinox drivers are at stake. Not having the ability to defrost your windshield could lead to traffic accidents vehicle damage, injury and possible death. I am writing this blog to make more Chevrolet Equinox drivers aware of the manufacturer defect.

I am an engineer familiar with the defect and have the opinion that the problem is either an over torquing actuator resulting in fatigue of the temperature blend door.

Please email me at: equinoxrecall@gmail.com

I would like to form a group for potential class action as GM has failed to acknowledge the manufacture defect.

Please see the following link to see the damaged part.

I've just discovered this same problem on my 2006 Pontiac Torrent (same as equinox) Please use the text I've written below to spread the word to other forums.

Failure of the HVAC Blend Door [1] has made defrosting the forward windshield in cold temperatures impossible. This is a safety issue because of the limiting of visibility and in violation of standard 103 [2] from the U.S. department of transportation. GM has admitted a design flaw in the HVAC Blend Door Actuator in that a dealer replacement uses an updated HVAC Blend Door Actuator which more accurately limits the rotational travel. The failure of the HVAC Blend Door occurs because the original faultily designed HVAC Blend Door Actuator travels too far causing structural stress on the blend door which eventually leads to premature failure of the blend door. This results in vent air not passing over the heat core, therefore making defrosting of the windshield not possible in cold conditions.

If you'd like to attempt it yourself the best resource I've found on the web is here --> http://www.handymanlyness.com/archives/auto/r...

Here is a repository of hundreds of people with the exact same issue (The Equinox is the same as the Torrent in this aspect)--> http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chevrolet-eq...

Here is a website a guy has created to help people to persuade GM to step up to the plate --> http://blenddoor.blogspot.com/

[1] verified by GM dealership after paying $135
[2] The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a legislative mandate under Title 49 of the United States Code, Chapter 301, Motor Vehicle Safety, to issue Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Regulations to which manufacturers of motor vehicle and equipment items must conform and certify compliance.--> http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/fmvss/...
