F. Sionil Jose: Why the Philippines is Standing Still
Why are we poor? More than ten years ago, James Fallows, editor of the Atlantic Monthly came to the Philippines and wrote about our “damaged culture” which, he asserted, impeded our development.
We are poor because our people are lazy. I pass by a slum area every morning - dozens of adults do nothing but idle, gossip and drink. We do not save. Look at the Japanese and how they save in spite of the fact that the interest given them by their banks is so little. They work very hard too.
We are great show-offs. Look at our women, how overdressed, over-coiffed they are, and Imelda epitomizes that extravagance. Look at our men, their manicured nails, their personal jewelry, their diamond rings. Yabang - that is what we are, and all that money expended on status symbols, on yabang.
We did not pursue agrarian reform like Japan and Taiwan. It is not so much the development of the rural sector, making it productive and a good market as well. Agrarian reform releases the energies of the landlords who, before the reform, merely waited for the harvest. They become entrepreneurs, the harbingers of change. Our nationalist icons like Claro M. Recto and Lorenzo Tañada opposed agrarian reform, the single most important factor that would have altered the rural areas and lifted the peasant from poverty. Both of them were merely anti-American.
And finally, we are poor because we have lost our ethical moorings. We condone cronyism and corruption and we don't ostracize or punish the crooks in our midst. Both cronyism and corruption are wasteful but we allow their practice because our loyalty is to family or friend, not to the larger good.

Take this and not just swallow it.
Ruminate on it. Hate it. But accept it's true. |

but...remember....you said i'm being soooooo negative about filipinos. now you see the light..??

marcell is Jane's creation...all the negativity, all the shout of hopelessness has bred her a marcell.
Was it hard labor jane? who planted the seed? javi? Ditch her out or your other LA cohorts? was marcell born out of wedlock? or was he a product of your "fair" and impartial "journalism"? |

The right question should be?
who is the first, being idiot or being lazy? we will wait for your comments. |

"Who is First,Born out of Wedlock, Being an Idiot" Lam excuses. People say "I tried" (Yeah for 1 Week and gave up). I have tried changing, Improving things for 15 years! Got in trouble, People that thought Bad of me but I changed one thing, One Idea, Finally Improved my life. Started to give up but friends (Verbilly) kicked my ass to keep going.
Most of what I here about are "Excuses". You need Help and Support, "Look in the Mirror" and keep going."IF YOU FALL YOU FALL ON YOUR OWN!" People drive Tricycles, Taxies, Jeepnees and after driving relax talke with friends and "DRINK 60% OF WHAT THEY MAKE PERDAY!" |

Who is F. Sionil Jose. Facts hurt, but true. So many lazy people in PI dependent with the monthly allowance from OFWs. Instead of using the help for education and or to improve their livelihood, they use it to brag about having money and need not work. For the OFWs, it means hard labor, not only working 8 hours but if more people to help in PI,we need to work 12 or 16 hours. What the heck. Go on hard working/educated OFWs Filipinos and propagate. Spread out your wings and change the whole world. We're role models. Never mind about the negativism of those losers who have nothing good to say but to ridicule the OFWS. I pity them - definitely, they're losers.

washing your hands eh. You post negativities in ur program, copy pasting news clips or writings that you know will titillate your cohorts in LA. And if exciting them wasn't enough you add your comments with true subjective bravado. Joe Burgos, Sheila Coronel, Letty Magsanoc, Malou Mangahas and Randy David are probably aghast by your outright distortion of facts. You had false beliefs that the people will blindly think that the hopelessness you thrust to their faces are made by a woman in government. Now you have spawned Filipino haters since all you ever showed about your country is hopelessness and chaos. Scroll back to the thousand postings here, not one was convinced by your LA tutas and your desperate subjective brandishing to rethink their position. In fact the more they stood by their convictions. Journalism was never meant for those who thirst for personal motivations. ...and so let there be more jane abao offspring like marcell... |

Blame it on the government. Blame it on the people! Well the government is resposible for building a solid infrastructure that would have helped this country to keep up with neighboring countries. The people are responsible for not caring. The people created the pollution of the air and water. The people keep on making more people that they can not afford to make. Irreversible damage has been done to the environment. I don't think Malacanang throws there trash in the Pasig River. It did not occur overnight! It was a gradual process that the government ignored. So why is this country making much progress. It seems there are very few here that want it to!!

I plea ignorance to many of these computer technologies. But then, Manila is just 21.5 hours away. If I was in Manila then, will the ISP location still say New York? |

Why are the Philippinos so poor? Well, nobody wants to do business with a crook. The reality is, the Philippines is the most corrupt country in asia. So, business tends to avoid it.
If someone was going to invest large sums of money in a country for a business of somekind, they would expect the costs (wages, taxes, cost of materials, and bribs) to be somewhat stable. With government officials trying to extort ever increasing amounts in bribes from businesses, it is no wonder they are leaving. The ZTE deal is just one publisized case out of many. When people talk openly about how it costs $1 million in bribes to "elected offials" to open a call center then there is something seriously wrong. "Moderate your greed" is an understatement. When businesses leave people loose jobs, that is why Philippinoes are poor. So how does it change, when people realize the current situation is hurting them. When they decide to confront corruption rather than accept it. It changes when people decide to make it difficult to be corrupt. When they start punishing those who are corrupt. Until that happens, things will only get worse. |
Just want to be sure that the readers don't mistake you for me. We just happened to have similar styles and conforming views. I wonder if there are others who have similar observations...jejeje..oh crap! we're both from d states..sh-it! my cover's blown! |

How can the filipino people go to work when there is no work available to them, Because only people who have connection can be able to get a job. Is not only filipino people have this problem, Just about every country have a lazy people too,....Is not all filipino people are lazy! In fact most of filipino people I know want a job. But, Can't find one. THIS IS ONE OF THE REASON WHY PHILIPPINES CAN'T PROSPER BECAUSE MOST OF FILIPINO PEOPLE DON'T HAVE A JOB, IN FACT MOST OF US NEED TO GET OUT AND FIND WORK IN ORDER TO GIVE A BETTER LIFE TO OUR FAMILY. AND THE REASON THE PHILIPPINES WELL NEVER GET OUT FROM UNDER BECAUSE THE PEOPLE RUNNING THE COUNTRY IS THE BIGGEST CROOKS. THIS IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IN THE PHILIPPINES! EITHER YOU AGREE WITH ME OR NOT. THIS IS TRUE! |

You’re going to make Jane Abao think, lol! Jane, don’t believe Working! The time difference in Jane Abao baby and Working’s posts is 2 hours. How can she be in Manila at one point and be in New York 2 hours later? The more logical scenario would be that Working Girl has a cohort in Manila and that she sends her comments to that cohort thru email for Topix posting through the username Jane Abao baby. And if you are smart enough to buy a conspiracy theory, you can figure out that that cohort is me, lol! |
