Full story: AllAfrica.com

Mmankosana Letsoela has been queuing since 5am to collect water. You would think that arriving so early at the bore-hole water pump; she would be the first in line.

If this is a joke, I am struggling to find it funny. If you`re trying to make a point, you`re dim-witted and displaying your ignorance.

One can live without food for almost a month but survive no longer than a week without water. Yet, although almost half of the world's population live in water-scarce countries, there actually is enough of this precious liquid for everyone.

The UN recommends that a person needs minimum of 50 litres of water a day for drinking, washing, cooking and sanitation, which over a billion people do not have access to. According to UNESCO, the world's population are appropriating 54% of all the accessible freshwater contained in rivers, lakes and underground aquifers. If per capita consumption of water resources continues to rise at its current rate, humankind could be using over 90% of all available freshwater within 25 years, leaving just 10% for all other living beings.

Freshwater lakes and swamps account for a mere 0.29% of the Earth's freshwater. 20% of all freshwater is in one lake, Lake Baikal in Asia. Another 20% is stored in the Great Lakes, Huron, Michigan, and Superior. Rivers hold only about 0.006% of total freshwater reserves. Mankind essentially uses only a drop in the bucket of the total available water supply.

It's a very heart-breaking story indeed. How can you sell water to your neighbour while your own people are struggling to acess that. It's a total ignorance to make money whistle people are impoverished. The whole saga is based on the fact some elites are selfish and greedy. The country is classified as HIPC (Highly Indebted Poor country) because of it owes the IMF and World Bank a very huge amount of money. But I always ask myself where the goes? To those who are in the supirior positions in government, could you please transform and improve citizens lifestyles rather than making us impoverished.

We asked the original writer to give us more clarity on this topic, so that we follow his line of thinking and perhaps provide counter arguments if necessary or substantiate his assertions

Is Lesotho classified as one of the HIPC Countries?

Check your facts!

Otherwise I agree: steps ought to be taken to ensure greater access to drinking water.

When will we ever learn?
What is even frustrating is the proximity of the origins of the story from the capital!

I hope some country-loving folk will not view this reporting as selective as we tend to do when the truth is laid naked under the premise of patriotism.

Fito motho oa heso, what do you think is the relevance of this King?
While we know 'in principle' the guy is said to have no influence on political matters, is the welfare of "his" people that a political matter?

Folks, this has been discussed so many times on this plartform i know, but really, what is this 'guys' function? Isn't there issues that he can question? Or is he also shying away from his duties because he is living large himself without worries? Basotho, are we aware that this peoples comfort is at our expense?

What would it really take for this nation to unite against this injustices AND DO THAT WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN?!

Moholoane, I also have the same reservations about my King. I understand that he has to be silent on political issues but I think he must not be silent when the welfare of his people is being overlooked by politicians. Morena Moshoeshoe (ROBALA KA KHOTSO MORENA OA KA)did give up the comfort of staying at the Place and convoy of black cars to voice his discontentment about the way Basotho were being treated by politicians.

The fact that Sechaba sa Basotho hasena metsi is ignorance that must publicly denounced eseng ho thoe its a political issue that demand Morena Oa Basotho to be silent.

I think we are a condemned nation!
The sooner Basotho realize that their survival cannot be entrusted in the hands of electorates the better. Then Basotho will know that governance is by the people to the people. Electorates are no demi-gods but public servants.
However, Basotho need to learn from their different political affiliations that:
Polititics are a system through which the nation involves in processes that govern and improve their lives AND NOT THAT IMPOVERISH THEM hamainly and otherwise.
