Good article. I have been traveling to Bulgaria and taking folks with me for many years--but we stay out of Sofia. In the outlying towns,$50 feeds 8 people at a nice restaurant. It costs about $30-$40 to feed the same group at a regular restaurant. Air conditioned rooms for about $40 per night are normal--some places with no air conditioning can be had for about $20. It is a great place to visit--especially the Stara Planina mountains (completely free of tourists with pack trains and wagons still used for carrying goods).
Prices rise each year. 9 years ago, everything was about 1/4 of what it is now.

We visited Bulgaria a few years ago when my son was in the Peace Corp there. A wonderful bargain once you arrived. One of the most gorgeous places I've seen. We traveled all over and had a marvelous time and more adventures than I can recount here. I would be hesitant to go without someone who spoke Bulgarian - although many Bulgarians do speak Engish.
