The recent Sentinel story about a naked woman parading last week through downtown Santa Cruz has drawn attention from media around the country, and provoked intense reactions from readers of the paper and ...

I think, to be honest, that we have bigger issues to worry about than whether someone walks down the street naked (or, for that matter, smoking a joint)

Given the concern for the woman's wellbeing that was expressed by many posters (and given that the cryptic "removed from the street for confidential reasons" statement), you would think that the Sentinel would question Cpt. Clark about why the woman was not questioned by the bike officer. But no, they don't bother. Either the Sentinel editorial writer doesn't care, or s/he didn't bother to read the posts. Or maybe they just read the snarky ones.
Sentinel, there were few people on Topix who were criticizing the police for not citing this woman. Far more were wondered why they would ignore a person who might be having psychiatric issues. You missed the point. |
|
My guess is that the police contacted mental health to do a welfare check once she left the mall and didn't just ignore it. If she had been having a mental health episode I think it would have been very traumatic to have cops and mental health workers descending on her and detaining her in the middle of the street. There was no immediate crisis that necessitated an emergency response.

Good point. As for the dodge about 'non-medical' use of marijuana, the police don't care whether it's medical or not. That is total bull. What they have put me through, and continue to put me through (with the cooperation of the district attorney) is cruel and wrong, and would be criminal in a sane and just world. See my blog. When 3 of them searched, and humiliated, and cited me on Pacific Avenue I had my paperwork. They didn't care. They put me through the 3rd degree, stopping me on the street, demanding to know who my doctor was, how long I had a recommendation, how much I was prescribed, and then cited me stating "A child might see you..." They stole my medicine, my pipe, my lighter, and charged me even though I had my recommendation with me. Every one of them knows who I am and that I am a medical marijuana patient. |

I'm talking about Simms, Aldridge, and Hoppe.

And then there was the time 4 First Alarm rent-a-cops, two trucks, 5 police, and two cars, found it necessary to harass me at midnight on a Friday night in front of the library. I was sitting on a bench using the wifi and they informed me that since the library was closed I was stealing the bench. They wanted to accues me of stealing the wifi, but that's kinda hard since I have a library card.

Santa Cruz has given me so many similar episodes I can't begin to keep track of them, or recount them all.

How can you steal WiFi if its advertised as public? Some cops do go out of their way looking to find probable cause where none actually exist. 95% of the cops are professionals just doing their job, but the 5% who are jerks give the rest a bad name. They need to figure out a way to weed out the officers with the 10 pound badges and those that get off on the authority and are not actually wanting to protect and serve. Many cops seem to forget who their bosses are, the tax paying public. |

"We agree with Clark that issues like aberrant behavior downtown do put the Santa Cruz police in the uncomfortable middle. A similar situation exists with medical marijuana and how to enforce laws prohibiting non-prescription uses of the drug.
Santa Cruz in general does not want people prosecuted for using marijuana. The law is somewhat ambiguous on what is or is not permitted. Clark said police have to interpret what the law says and what the public expects and that what might be deemed offensive in Scotts Valley or Capitola would not be seen that way in Santa Cruz because community standards are different. Correction: "Cop" (as in one single), and "question", as in not "descending on her and detaining her in the middle of the street". Stop exaggerating for effect. |

As for the weird segue Sgt. Clark made to the question of medical pot -- so what was his excuse for having his officers do nothing when hundreds of people all lit up at once up at UCSC (and the Sentinel ran a "wink-wink" photo of the smoke cloud). Paralysis from being "put in the middle"? I don't think that all those folks had prescriptions. And I'm sure that most of them got into their cars and drove home, a bit worse for the toking.
The fact is that local law enforcement (city and county) picks and chooses when it comes to citations and arrests. If you all can get away with doing nothing, you do. And it shows in the deteriorating quality of life in SC. |

I would absolutely love to hear what a lawyer has to say about that. It's an interesting question. To my knowledge (non-lawyer) there is nothing illegal in accessing anyone's wifi unless you are hacking into private files or database. And you were using public wifi in the first place. I remember seeing a television news show where a reporter and a hacker drove around NYC and found wifi signals from businesses in the surrounding highrises. The reporter stressed that they were breaking no laws, since they were not doing anything on the networks -- just accessing them. |
No you're not, you're talking about yourself...AGAIN! And it only took seven posts for you to hijack this thread to be about you. You should be palmspringsnarcissist |

++++++++++ You must have really been arrogant (or dumb) to get busted for smoking pot. Did you make an announcement or blow it in peoples faces? There must be more to the story. Even if you did get caught, it's only a citation. It's jail time in most of our country and death in Islamic countries like Indonesia. As for the naked gal, I would rather see her nude than wearing a berka. |

I don't think I'm nearly as important as the police, the D.A., the Downtown Hosts, and the Downtown Association seem to think I am. I sit here in total amazement when I think of all the money and time they've spent on me. Evidently they think I'm a major threat to civilization, and mankind. And probably the environment as well. |
