Welcome to beijing. I left Chengdu on friday to return to Oz. I love you people. I was called "Old friend" by the people I meet. I'm White, 60 year old male with blue eyes. I have changed my ideas about China by going there. The people who post here haven't had the privalidge of visiting your country and meeting Chinese or the Tibetan people. They haave never read a history bok on Tibet and the pre "invasion" conditions. The Crouching Tiger is awakening. If there ever was a cristian god I think he must love China and it's beautiful people.

I would suggest all those with ISP addresses originating in US refrain from making stupid comments. You are making the world hate Americans. You may think that you are exercising your free speech right. You are actually abusing your free speech right. What you are doing is like walking around naked, exposing your ugly self.

I also have some advice for the Free Tibet type. Natural disasters have nothing to do with God or Buddha. Think about this. If Buddha is on your side, why are you not getting what you want. Stop chanting free tibet. Buddha is not a god. Buddha is a person, an enlightened person. You need to be enlightened

If you have not made a charitable contribution in the last 12 months to help victims of natural disasters, you have no right to speak about those victims

Natural disasters can happen anywhere, anytime, to anybody. You may well be the next natural disaster victim.

In California, we frequently have earthquake, flood, landslides, wild fires, draught, water rationing, and riots. I hope no one in this world will laugh at us when we have our disasters.

The force that created this is called tetonic plate, people should look it up. Its the same force that formed mount everest and the same one that will rock california soon as experts predicted. I don't know if God or Budda caused all of this, but I think if he did then he is doing it rather fairly without bias.

I think if there is a God who is responsible for natural disaster, he or she is doing it at random with good people and bad people have equal chance of getting hurt.

I know this sounds really really bad. But I find one thing that makes me feel more confident about China in this disaster... Chengdu did not fall. That city is only 300 Km away...yet the buildings stayed up. This makes me feel that Chinese building standards are not bad. If Chengdu didn't fall, then Shanghai would not fall if an earthquake happened here (of course, there never are earthquakes in Shanghai where I am anyway).

I'm not sure, but I would be its the buildings built between 1955 - 1990 that collapsed. I hear that those buildings built during the "communist" times...especially 1970-1985...all have rotten concrete.

On the other hand, Shanghai used to be swamp land. Probably the land would liquify (i think its called liquifaction) and everything would come down.

I highly doubt it. Chengdu is few hundred KMs away from the earthquake center, so the damage shouldn't be too much no matter what. My hometown is few hundred KM away from Tangshan, when Tangshan entirely collapsed in the quake, all buildings in my hometown were ok - it was 1976.

When I look at the pictures of the collapsed buildings in the worst damaged areas, my feeling tells me that the quality of the buildings are fcuking terrible - heavy and weak!
