Letter cites corruption in Mexico

Now there's a news flash. Who would of thought mexico was corrupt. It is in their blood.

I've lived in Mexico and there are a number of certainties that one must understand:

1) The political process is run by a very small group of very rich people. These people are there to promote their interests as well as the interests of their friends who also tend to be rich. The only people to get picked for office are people with money and they must be willing to resist change at all costs.
2) Public servants here are paid like waitresses. They earn a little money.. say 5 grand a year.. and they earn alot of tips. That's the way the system works and everyone understands that. I have not yet met a public servant who wouldn't take a bribe. But it must be done with respect. Imagine living in a system that is completely corrupted top to bottom. Democracy is very very fragile. Safety is an illusion. Stability is one cheque away from changing.
3) This is a country where 1 or 2% of the people own over 95% of the countries wealth. And they don't like taxes. Hence the disconnect in budgets. Mexico continually fights the fact that they have high GDP and poor tax collection due primarily to the fact that the people that make the bulk of the income in the country don't like to pay their share of the taxes. This is why the hospitals in this country are a certifiable disgrace, that there are over 20,000 schools in this country that don't even have running water. Poor areas have a fraction of the street lighting that wealthier areas have. Half of this countries population lives in poverty.

The problem with Mexico is that the rich here have completely screwed up the system for their benefit.. but I don't think it's going to last. I think it's already cracking. The poor are starting to say enough is enough. Crime is skyrocking.

The kicker.. and it's going to hit the rich just as much as the poor, is when global warming starts to hit home here over the next 15 to 20 years. The aquifers are drying up. Mexico City has already started to ration water. Other large cities will follow. This will affect irrigation, this will affect crop yields. A greater and greater percentage of Mexicans will not be able to eat and when this happens the social fabric will start to suffer and dramatically change.

I love alot about this country... but it is heading down a path which will lead to revolution.. and it will be bloody. I do not believe this is in question.

This will also cause the end to the American Empire because the US will have to bring it's troops home to defend it's border from millions of refugees.

Well written Trevman. I second everything that you've said. No number of letters to the corrupt president will change things. He won't believe that his cabinet is corrupt. They don't see what they do as illegal or corrupt. It's a way of life out there. Businesses don't get contracts because of winning a bid. Contracts are awarded to friends. Cheap materials are substituted for cheaper materials and monies are pocketed. This is a bad place.

People get the worst govt they will put up with. One can look around the world, and see this is true. There will be no revolution, because it would change nothing. Should the consciousness of the people change, highly unlikely, the govt will change

When people can't eat.. all rules are off.

China is going to know this better than anyone in fact. The rivers which allow the Chinese population to thrive are all fed by the spring glacier melt off. These glaciers are shrinking at 7% per year. Per year. In 20 years there won't be a spring glacier melt off. These rivers will flow all year round based on rain.. which doesn't necesarily fit crop cycles. Chinas not just in a little trouble.. It's future is nothing short of catastrophe.

I assure I'm not a doomsayer when I say this. You can find this stuff on any site and Chinese scientists and politicians are scared right now. Really scared.

Anyways.. back to my original point. When the poor population can't feed itself they will rebel. You're talking almost half of the Mexican population. People will do anything necessary to feed themselves and their families. I'm not talking oppressed. I'm talking desperate in the truest sense of the word. Desperate people don't negotiate.. they take ... and they take aggressively.

Imagine large cities with a large % of desperate people. It's called Chaos.

Gosh I sound negative.

Anywhoo.. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that when you have such income disparity in a country.. eventually the result is bad... Combined with climate change.. it's scary bad.
