    By Ray Chickrie Caribbean News Now contributor PARAMARIBO, Suriname -- After more than eight years, Suriname's Johan Pengel International Airport, with the cooperation of the United States, has now been certified as a category 1 airport, which will now allow Suriname-based airlines to fly non-stop to the US and, with this development, state owned Surinam Airways will begin non-stop flights from Paramaribo to Miami in September. A 2014 US Embassy press release stated that, to establish non-stop flights between Suriname and the United States, aviation security standards set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization must be met.

    PARAMARIBO, Suriname : The Suriname government says it will continue with the policies outlined by the International Monetary Fund after thousands of people took to the streets last weekend protesting the government's economic policy and calling on it to resign. In a statement, the Desi Bouterse government said "we will continue on the IMF path we are on" and insisted that the standby arrangement it has with the Washington-based financial institution is crucial to dealing with the economic crisis the country is facing.
