    Mavis Staples, a legendary R&B and gospel singer, has unexpectedly canceled her speaking engagement at the Lawrence Public Library on Wednesday.  Staples was scheduled to speak at the library's 780s Series, "An Evening with Mavis Staples," at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St. "Mavis Staples regrets that she has been forced to cancel her engagements this week so that she can attend to a family emergency," the library said in a statement. "Mavis loves her fans and is grateful to everyone who was planning to attend the event, and she sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience this unfortunate cancellation may have caused.
