  2. DVD Review: 'Bait' Read the original story

    Sunday Apr 28 | Topix

It was perhaps foolish to think that Bait (2012) might recall the raw menace of Stephen Spielberg's Jaws (1975) or Joe Dante's B-movie classic Piranha (1978). But Kimble Rendall's toothless horror is nothing of anything really: an underwater travesty which takes itself far too seriously and comes nowhere close to making the slightest contribution to the genre. Rendall has presumably lured the cast from 90210 to star in his film as a group of air-headed teens and shoppers, from Xavier Samuel (The Twilight Saga) to Julian McMahon, find themselves trapped inside a supermarket following a devastating tsunami.

  7. Fire with FireRead the original story

    Mar 7, 2013 | Topix

Fire With Fire is exactly the kind of movie you'd find hovering near the bottom shelf of your local video store, starring the likes of Steven Seagal or Wesley Snipes. How it is that they managed to round up such an impressive cast as this is mind-boggling, and that's not to mention the blink-and-you'll-miss-them appearances from the likes of 50 Cent and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (B.A. from The A-Team movie). Jeremy Coleman (Josh Duhamel) is a fire-fighter in a particularly rough neighbourhood, just doing his shopping in a local store when it gets held up by some Aryans, including big bad guy David Hagan (Vincent D'Onofrio) and one his henchmen (Vinnie Jones), who go on to kill the store owner and his son. As the only witness to the crime, Coleman is put under witness protection by Detective Cella (Bruce Willis) and Agent Durham (Rosario Dawson), the latter of which he promptly falls in love with. But Hagan isn't going to allow Coleman to testify against him, sending a hitman (Nip/Tuck's Julian McMahon) after him to take him out. Realising that running and hiding isn't working out, Coleman decides he's going to have to take matters into his own hands… Everything is nicely set up for Coleman to use his fireman skills to kill the bad guys, but unfortunately this potentially exciting Backdraft-redux never comes to light. Instead there's just a lot of punching and kicking and shooting and running, and none of it in a particularly fun way.

  8. Chasing SleepRead the original story

    Mar 7, 2013 | Topix

When small-town English college professor, Ed Saxon’s wife Eve doesn’t come home one night, Ed (Jeff Daniels) feels troubled and has a difficult time trying to sleep. Ed calls the police, who can find no trace of his wife except for her abandoned car. In the meantime, Ed is going crazy with his insomnia, trying to increase his medication enough to be able to sleep. But instead of helping him sleep, the medication seems to be giving him hallucinations and speeding up the decomposing of his mind and mental abilities. Passing through his consciousness like ghosts, in between bouts of hallucination and mental fatigue, Ed is visited by detectives Derm and Stewart (Gil Bellows and Ben Shenkman), as well as one of his students, Sadie (Emily Bergl), who is obviously more than slightly interested in the good professor, in addition to his wife’s angry lover George (Julian McMahon). Jeff Daniels gives a tour de force performance as the crumbling Ed Saxon whose house is falling apart bit by bit as he is losing his mind… Starring: Jeff Daniels Julian Mcmahon Emily Bergl Gil Bellows Zach Grenier

While in the program, he falls in love with the agent. The evil Hagan doesn’t want Coleman to testify against him and he sends a hitman (Julian McMahon) to chase after the firefighter. Coleman realizes that it is impossible to run and hide forever. So he decides to settle the matter with Hagan with his own hands.Coleman uses his firefighter skills to mow down the bad guys in his way but it falls short of an exciting climax. 14. Kayla Upadhyaya: A 'Charmed' first loveRead the original story

    Feb 24, 2013 | Topix

Before you revoke all of my remaining critic cred, hear me out. “Charmed” might have been a disaster of a show. The time I tried — and failed with grandeur — to convince my friend LaToya that it was better than “Buffy” might be one of my life’s most embarrassing and regretted moments (keep in mind that I’d never actually seen “Buffy” yet). But “Charmed” taught me how to love TV. Sure, I watch “Breaking Bad” and “Homeland” and “Louie” and a staggering slew of other shows to which “Charmed,” even on its best day, could never hold a candle. But I also am genuinely upset that I’m behind on “Pretty Little Liars” right now; and I watched every single episode of the “Charlie’s Angels” reboot; and this summer, I marathoned “H2O: Just Add Water,” an Australian program about teen mermaids. “Charmed” taught me that a show doesn’t have to be a work of art for me to love it. Along with giving me a never-ceasing crush on Julian McMahon and a love for pairing casual, oversized sweaters with leather pants, “Charmed” made my love for TV unpretentious (I’ll admit, I can be a snob at times, but I also take pride in the fact that not many critics love the CW as loudly as I do).

2012 #8242;s BAIT takes the retardation of most high-concept ideas and ups the ante so high that the proverbial bar is knocked deep into the ocean. BAIT‘s high-concept question is “What if we put sharks in a super market?” Well, they would die, clearly. “But, what if the super market is flooded?” Well, then you might end up with a shark movie even worse than my very first What The Film!?

  19. Review: Fire With FireRead the original story

    Nov 25, 2012 | Topix

Bruce Willis and 50 Cent appeared in an action thriller for producers Randall Emmett and George Furla we got the god-awful Set-Up. Thankfully their latest endeavour, Fire With Fire, is an altogether more exciting prospect – a classic revenge thriller featuring one of my favourite actors, Law Order: Criminal Intent‘s Vincent D’Onofrio, in a rare villainous role. Fire With Fire has a massive cast, featuring some huge names – none bigger than Bruce Willis, who actually takes a backseat to the younger Duhamel. In fact the relationship between Duhamel’s character and that of Willis’ is reminiscent of the grand-daddy of action flicks, Die Hard, with Duhamel in the shoes of Willis; and Willis playing a similar character to Reginald VelJohnson’s Sgt. Powell in John McTiernan’s 80s classic.
