    In 1945, while she was in the hospital recovering from the Caesarean birth of her second child, Ethel Merman, the-already-acclaimed “First Lady of the musical comedy stage,” was visited by Dorothy Fields, who suggested Merman star as Annie Oakley in a musical that she and her brother Herbert were writing with Jerome Kern. Merman accepted; Kern had a stroke and died a few days later; the producers, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, invited Irving Berlin to replace him; and the result was “Annie Get Your Gun,” the Broadway hit that ran for nearly three years and 1,147 performances and went on to became Berlin's most successful score.
