    Gowan, who was born in Scotland but moved to Canada as a child, had built a following in his adopted country on the strength of several albums, including 1985's “Strange Animal,” which featured the Canadian Top 5 song “A Criminal Mind.” But after opening for American progressive rock band Styx during the Canadian leg of the band's 1997 tour, Gowan's career took off in a different way. After his set during a show at the Montreal Forum, on what Gowan recalls as being “a very interesting night on stage,” he was called back by avid fans three times.

    In 1987 when pop-rock artist Lawrence Gowan wrote the song Awake the Giant there's no possible way he would have known that nearly 30 years later in Thunder Bay, Ontario, he'd be performing the song, so close to the legendary landmass on Friday, July 8 as part of the all Canadian Bluesfest line-up. And who knows,the Sleeping Giant may very well be woken.
