But even within this strict framework of rockabilly and country traditions, West can't help but detour now and then into the rich and diverse Phoenix history that exists outside of those genres, briefly mentioning the shock rock of Alice Cooper, whose garage band the Spiders started here, and offering asides about the black soul music of south Phoenix and thriving Mexican polka traditions in the city's Latino neighborhoods.

Duane Eddy paired up with producer/songwriter Lee Hazelwood in Arizona in the 50s, and the rest is history! His band, the Rebel Rousers, featured such major talents as Steve Douglas, Jim Horn, and keyboard player Larry Knechtel, and all would go on to work as part of Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew.
