    A Llangollen licensee told councillors that a gate which fire officers said had to be kept open was actually kept locked at the request of the police. Stephen Evans, who runs the Prince of Wales pub in Regent Street, told members of Denbighshire's licensing committee that he was willing to comply with all the requirements of the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service who said that the gate should have an electronic lock to allow easy egress in an emergency.

    Coroner John Gittins opened an inquest at County Hall, Ruthin on Monday into the death of Russell Beck, 51, who was found near the Chirk Aqueduct on the evening of July 20. The inquest heard Mr Beck, a call centre worker from Boundary Lane, Port Sunlight, Wirral, was reported missing by his sister on July 16 and police enquiries led them to believe he had stayed at a hotel in the Llangollen area that weekend.

When the discovery was made at about 9pm, police and ambulance crews raced to the scene near Wrexham, where Mr Beck was pronounced dead.
