    It was back in 2010, I was working down in Cork on some research for my PhD, like everybody else I was gripped by the arrival of the IMF in Ireland and the ensuing collapse of the government as the Green Party announced that they wanted an election in early 2011. Well, there pushes Irish unity another few years down the road I thought, as with the country under the control of the IMF made the economic case for reunification next to impossible.

    Ian Richard Kyle Paisley was born on April 6 1926 in Armagh into a family which, on his father's side, had roots in the Scottish settlers who came to the townland of Brackey near Sixmilecross in Co Tyrone in the early 17th century. Both the Paisley and Kyle families had been active in the Orange Order and Paisley's father, James Kyle Paisley, had been a member of the Ulster Volunteer Force during the Home Rule crisis of 1912-13.

    A leading Co Fermanagh GAA coach, who claimed he was under pressure from loyalist paramilitaries to defraud the VAT man of over three quarters of a million pounds, has been jailed for a total 16 months. However, Dungannon Crown Court Judge Gemma Loughran told 47-year-old father of six, Gerald Moane, that she could not accept or act on his allegations as they had never formed any part of his defence case.
