    The historic 19th century redwood surfboards are unveiled at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History on Thursday, June 25. To a dispassionate or incurious eye, they are merely two planks of gray weathered wood, something you might come across moldering in the brush behind a log pile at someone's Santa Cruz Mountains cabin. But through the eyes of Kim Stoner or Geoffrey Dunn or Bob Pearson or Barney Langner or any number of surfers and/or spectators at a special ceremony at the Museum of Art & History last Thursday, these two planks of wood carry a staggering cultural meaning.

    They called it the Big Game even though it had nothing to do with Cal or Stanford.The Hillsdale and Aragon softball programs were both powerhouses back in 1990 when they first met in a Friday night fundraiser for the San Mateo Youth Softball Association at Chanteloup Field.That matchup was termed the Big Game in the San Mateo softball community.On Friday the two rivals will meet in the 25th anniversary of that first game. Players from the 1990 game will be introduced in a pregame ceremony.

    William J. Morey Jr., a thoroughbred trainer who won over 1,300 races mostly on the Northern California circuit during his 45-year career, died Friday. He was 74. He died at a rehabilitation facility in Los Altos after a long struggle with cancer, according to officials at Golden Gate Fields racetrack.

    The first sighting occurred around 8 p.m. when a person saw a lion jump over a fence and into a creek bed behind a property in the area of Fernwood Street and West Hillsdale Boulevard, San Mateo police said. Less than four hours later, a passing motorist reported seeing a mountain lion in San Carlos, according to San Mateo County emergency officials.
