After a more than two-hour closed session at City Hall on Monday evening, Mayor Jim Knight read a statement saying, “The City Council and Mr. Widmer were unable to reach an agreement and the City Council has voted 4-1, with Councilman Campbell voting no, to rescind its offer of employment to Mr. Widmer. Additionally, the council has directed Mr. Bob Murray of Bob Murray & Associates to resume the search for a new city manager.” A statement released later by the city added that Deputy City Manager Carolynn Petru will continue serving in the role until a new city manager is selected. The last time a ranked USC team beat a ranked Stanford team - and they each go into Saturday's 12:30 p.m. kickoff among the top 25 teams in the country - Richard Nixon was president, Walter Alston managed the Dodgers and “The French Connection” was on its way to winning the Oscar for best picture.
