EL PASO TIMES UTEP freshman wide receiver Tyler Batson is tackled by defensive back Traun Roberson during their Spring Game Friday at the Sun Bowl. In a way, the upshot of the UTEP football team's spring game is exactly what should happen when a team is casting about for a new quarterback.

  12. UTEP football: "Spring Game" previewRead the original story

    Apr 9, 2015 | Miner Rush

The reality of Friday's spring game is that it's not really a game with a running game clock and score, but a glorified practice aimed at fans in getting a first look at the 2015 Miners. None of the less, it's a big time opportunity for one more practice filled with hard work, fine tuning, and progress, and most important: one more day of coaches' evaluation in attempts of setting a layout for the 2015 depth chart heading into the summer.

    Apr 3, 2015 | El Paso Times

One of the few big position battles this spring is at backup tailback, and that got muddied in Friday's scrimmage for the best reason of all: Both Treyvon Hughes and David Hamm looked good. Settling this isn't urgent, as Jeremiah Laufasa will join the mix in the fall and the 10 carries per game that will go to Aaron Jones' backup is most likely to be determined by production early in the season when all three will split time.

    Mar 27, 2015 | El Paso Times

At least on the top row of UTEP's depth chart, those two don't sync this spring, as four of the five line starters return to a unit that was the strength of the offense last year, and a fifth, new left tackle Chris Thomas, was starting by the end of 2014 when Derek Elmendorff broke his leg. That adds up to a settled spring in the offensive trench, which on the balance is a supremely good asset for a group that will be protecting a new quarterback.

    Mar 24, 2015 | El Paso Times

After watching film of what ended up being a 110-play scrimmage, coach Sean Kugler said the three quarterbacks were still deadlocked, but he did single out some players for having good days. On the defensive line he cited the play of Roy Robertson-Harris, Nick Usher and Christian Harper, at linebacker Trey Brown and Alvin Jones and in the secondary Kelvin Fisher, Jr. On offense he like the days tight end M.J. McFarland and receiver Jaquan White had, but he said there were too many errors on the line.

As a general rule that approaches an axiom, when a team loses its two-deep at a position, it rebuilds there. That should have been the plan at a tight end spot that has always been a strength for UTEP, as four-year standout Eric Tomlinson left for the NFL, as did his backup Katrae Ford.

    Mar 6, 2015 | El Paso Times

For the first time in at least a decade, UTEP enters spring football knowing it runs a house built on defense.
