    The Massachusetts Chess Association held the state's scholastic championships in Marlborough on March 18. The invitation-only championship is held in three age groups, 8 & under, 11 & under, and 14 & under, and an open high school section, which had 21 entrants this year. It was won by Carissa Yip of Andover, who is continuing her winning ways.

    All four minor hockey teams with North Country ties moved one win closer to advancing past the preliminary rounds of their respective USA Hockey Tier II National Championship tournaments after netting their second wins on Friday. At the Youth 16U championships in Wayne, N.J., the St. Lawrence Thunder boys moved to 2-0 with a 5-1 win over the Tampa Scorpions while all three girls teams with area connections competing at the Girls Tier II tournaments in Marlborough, Massachusetts, picked up their second victories in as many days.

The annual conference has been a tradition in the Middlesex and Worcester District since 1980 and has been hosted by predecessors of Senator Eldridge, including former Congressman Chet Atkins, former Governor Paul Cellucci, former Senator of Environmental Affairs Robert Durand and former State Senator Pam Resor.
