    The American Legion's float took home the honor of "Checkered Flag Award" at this year's 60th Annual Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade honoring the famed race and Memorial Day. The Legion's float theme was "Celebrating our Communities," tying in nicely with the parade's overall theme of "Celebrating the Stories of May!" More than 300,000 spectators lined the streets of Indianapolis for the parade, joined by another 1 million watching from their televisions around the country.

    American Legion Riders and members of the Indiana Rolling Thunder Chapter will conduct a special ceremony in downtown Indianapolis before departing May 26 for the 29th annual ride into the nation's capital. The riders will dedicate a POW-MIA chair of honor at the Indiana War Memorial, 431 N. Meridian St., at 10 a.m. The ceremony will include presentation of the colors by the Jennings County High School Color Guard, presentation of the Missing Man Table ceremony and a balloon released for the 50 Indiana troops who are still listed as unaccounted for from the Vietnam War.

    More than 200 women veterans attended the Indiana Women Veterans' Conference at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to hear inspiring words from prominent military women; to attend workshops on VA benefits, health care, art therapy and resume writing; and to get pampered with massages and beauty makeovers. The event, sponsored by the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs, was also an opportunity for the only all-women's American Legion post in the state to let women veterans know "that we are here for them," said Indianapolis Post 438 Commander Christylee Vickers.
