Melvin Cooley Cline III is now charged with second-degree child abuse, being a felon in possession of a firearm and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, the father failed to provide a safe environment for his son, who found Cline's gun, which he hadn't secured and was in illegal possession of, while Cline and the 3-year-old's mother were having a fight.

Karl Shaw, 61, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Bernard A. Friedman in Detroit federal court after pleading guilty in December 2017 to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. Shaw was at the center of two coinciding investigations as police searched for the dealer who sold fentanyl to the overdose victim, while also looking into complaints of drug distribution in and around businesses in Dearborn, according to the U.S. attorney's office.
