    Southern Ionics announced last week the opening of a dry mill in Pierce County to process the zircon ore it is mining in Charlton County, a signal the company will be in Southeast Georgia for years to come, officials said. Former congressman Lindsay Thomas, a Screven resident who works as a consultant for Southern Ionics, said the company examined sites in several counties before choosing a site in Offerman near the Pierce-Wayne County line.
