    Watauga County is one of 17 counties in the western part of the state that is experiencing a moderate drought due to lack of adequate rainfall, according to a federal drought map. "The counties in the southwestern mountain area of the state have been experiencing a drying trend that has lasted several months, which impacts soil moisture levels, stream flows and groundwater levels," Rebecca Ward, extension climatologist with the State Climate Office of North Carolina, said in a news release.

    According to a Watauga County Sheriff's Office shift report, deputies were involved in a high-speed pursuit after attempting to stop a vehicle on Old U.S. 421 South near Wildcat Road in Deep Gap at approximately 3 a.m. May 8. According to the report, the vehicle, a black Honda Civic with aftermarket rims, fled down Old U.S. 421 through Deep Gap with its headlights turned off. After turning onto U.S 421 South towards Wilkes County the pursuit reached speeds of more than 100 mph, the report said.

    The town of Boone announced May 5 that it has filed a complaint with the Watauga County Clerk of Court to enforce its zoning ordinance against the owner and operators of Mountain View Speedway at the old fairgrounds on Roby Greene Road. The town previously issued a notice of violation and order to cease activities at the racetrack until a permit was properly applied for and issued as required under the zoning ordinance.

    Since the July 26, 2012, death of Watauga County Deputy Sheriff William Mast, the community has come together each year in a unified effort to honor his memory and lend assistance to other families dealing with physical challenges and/or death. A group of individuals known as Hunter's Heroes, named for Mast's son, works tirelessly this time each year to host fundraising events as a way to continue Mast's legacy of community service.
