"Chip" Nielsen signed the order Monday after the defendants - town chairman Dennis Reuss, supervisor Denny McGann, and then supervisor Dennis Duke - acknowledged in a stipulation they had broken the law last Sept. 8. Vilas County district attorney Martha Milanowski had filed a formal complaint again the town board after The Lakeland Times asked her office last February to investigate the matter.

    A couple years ago, the Landfill Venture Group, the consortium of 13 Vilas County towns and the city of Eagle River that leases county land the landfill sits on, approached the Vilas County Forestry Department with the possibility of expanding the landfill with a total of 71 acres next door. To do that, the county would have to come up with other forested acreage elsewhere to replace the 71 acres for what officials with the Department of Natural Resources say is "for the public good."

It isn't a new issue by any means and has been written about in stories published in The Lakeland Times in just over the course of the past few years as committees such as the Vilas County board's tribal concerns and law enforcement committees have talked about what has been done and what needs to be done to combat an issue which has become what many public health officials as well as law enforcement officials say is a nationwide epidemic.

In existence as an idea since May but having only recently gained steam in October, the proposed program would transport members of the general public, as well as the cross country ski club at Lakeland Union High School to Minocqua Winter Park. In the experimental arrangement, area residents and members of the non-LUHS supported group would be driven by transit commission vehicles a couple of times a week for the usual rates - $2 for a one-way trip - and, potentially, a few more excursions in the near future.

Otherwise, those wishing to seek re-election have until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 2 to turn in papers.
