An advisory reverse 911 call was issued prior to the explosion by the Tehama County Sheriff's Department to advise residents around the detonation site of the potential for loud explosions.

According to a news release from the Tehama County Sheriff's Office, the items were reported Wednesday around 8:45 a.m. Officers responded to an address on Rainbow Ridge at Rancho Tehama Reserve near Corning after a clean-up crew discovered blasting caps and chemicals including gun powder in a shed on the property.
