    The woman who hit three people near the Hi-Vu Motor Inn while driving at night in February and left the scene before police arrived was sentenced in Strafford County Superior Court on Tuesday to 12 months in jail, all suspended for good behavior. One of the mitigating factors leading to the light sentence was the fact that Dawn Sandler, 49, of South Berwick, Maine, did immediately stop after she hit three people who were crossing Rochester Hill Road at night, asked a witness to call police because she said she didn't have her cell phone and helped stop traffic, said Assistant Strafford County Attorney Kathryn Smykowski, who prosecuted the case.

    The Strafford County Commissioners, County Attorney, Sheriff and Strafford House of Corrections officials will hold a press conference on Thursday to discuss the opioid issues at the county jail.  On June 6, the Dover Fire Department responded to the jail on County Farm Road in Dover to evaluate five inmates who were suspected of overdosing on opioids at the jail; three of the inmates were taken by ambulance to the hospital for further evaluation though they returned to the jail later that day. The Sheriff's department is leading the investigation, but has yet to publicly announced any findings.

    The Somersworth woman charged in the hit-and-run accident that killed a woman pedestrian last Saturday night made a brief appearance Thursday afternoon in Strafford County Superior Court in Dover before waiving arraignment.  Lisa Devore, 31, with a last known address of 65 Green St., Apt #4, Somersworth, went before a judge at 1 p.m. and waived arraignment on a felony conduct-after-an-accident charge. She bail was set at $5,000 cash.
