    A lawsuit brought by private citizens in Mecklenburg County to void a four-year contract renegotiation for Superintendent of Schools James Thornton was dismissed Thursday by a Circuit Court judge on the grounds the parties lacked legal standing to challenge the School Board's decision on the matter. The civil suit - filed by Alyson Elliott, Leilani Todd, Wanda Bailey, Marah Michael, Kimberly Mullins, Kristi Haddaway, Michael Bryant, Kevin Newcomb and Kimberly Fuller, all Mecklenburg County residents - challenged the legality of the trustees' July 31 vote to renegotiate Thornton's contract, and to pay him a $9,000 annual annuity.

Zavier Deeon Fritz, 23, the suspected armed robber in an Oct. 19 holdup at Gator's General Store in Skipwith, was arrested in Hopewell on Thursday.

    A high speed chase near South Hill on Thursday ended with the capture of a Connecticut man, Mark Pejtri, 32. The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Ooffice reported that around 2 p.m. on Dec. 4, Investigator Rusty Callahan was heading eastbound on Highway 58 near Landfill Road when he was passed by Pejtri's vehicle traveling "at a high rate of speed." Callahan activated his warning lights and siren, but Pejtri refused to stop.
