    A Vernon Hill woman who picked up a stray dog by the side of the road thinking she was doing a kindly deed is now seeking help of her own: Vehicle owners must remove county decals from their windshields, according to a new rule passed by the Virginia Safety Inspection Program that went into effect Jan. 1. Earlier this year, Mecklenburg County stopped issuing the stickers, which could be purchased only after residents paid their personal property tax bills. In lieu of the decals, the county opted this year to tack a $25 fee onto the property tax bill of every vehicle owner.

George Maida, who hosted The Electric Croude and Classical Evening on WCVE The Community Idea Stations, died the morning of Dec. 23 on Interstate 85. Maida was headed south in his 1997 Honda Civic, and was in Mecklenburg County, near the Virginia-North Carolina state line, when his car ran off the interstate, struck an embankment and landed in a creek below the highway, according to Virginia State Police.
