By the end of his tenure last spring, student vocational nurses from McLennan Community College were reportedly trying to figure out when Wells wasn't working so they could work their internships free of his supposedly sexist and racist palaver.

    McLennan County department heads are requesting about $1.8 million for new county positions, three department heads want raises, and more than $100,000 is being requested in new carpet as commissioners prepare the upcoming budget. Commissioners will continue working through budget requests for fiscal year 2017 at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Commissioners Courtroom on the first floor of the McLennan County Courthouse, 501 Washington Ave. County leaders must adopt the budget by Aug. 26 for the new fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1. Department heads have requested almost 100 individual raises for county employees, totaling more than $215,000.

    A McLennan County jury recommended a probated sentence Wednesday for a Waco man who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. Judge Matt Johnson of Waco's 54th State District Court will sentence Markal DeVonta Shorter, 21, in about three weeks after reviewing a presentencing report to determine how long Shorter's probationary term will be and what terms and conditions the judge will impose.

    McLennan County commissioners are expecting to spend $93.8 million next year, with increases in property values fueling about $6 million in new revenue if the tax rate stays flat. Officials expect the county to bring in $100.5 million for fiscal year 2017, which starts Oct. 1. Commissioners' deadline to adopt a budget is Aug. 26. Auditor Stan Chambers said the county has preliminary taxable property values in from the McLennan County Appraisal District, and final numbers should be available by the end of the month.
