    The second annual Lincoln Idol singing competition is on the horizon and an additional prize for the winner has raised the stakes for the competitors. Arts Council of Lincoln County president Deanna McGinnis revealed this week that in addition to the $1,500 cash prize and a showcase on the Arts Council Christmas float in the Lincolnton parade, this year's first place winner will receive a free studio recording session courtesy of the Sound Factory of Charlotte.

    The Lincoln County Board of Elections met earlier this week and set a tentative date and plan for one-stop voting hours and polling locations for the November general election. At this moment, Lincoln County residents wishing to cast their ballots prior to Election Day can vote as early as Oct. 20. However, Gov. Pat McCrory has filed a request with the United States Supreme Court that, if approved, would reinstate North Carolina's previous election laws and reduce the number of early voting days back to 10 instead of 17. "When they passed the voter identification laws it reduced the number of days available for early voting," board of elections chairman Todd Burgin said.

    Chad Dylan Smith, 22, of John Beam Road in Vale, was arrested on Tuesday after Lincoln County Sheriff's Office narcotics detectives seized more than two ounces of cocaine, cash and an AK-47 rifle while executing a search warrant. Deputies said that Smith sold nearly 1.5 ounces of cocaine to undercover detectives in multiple purchases during an investigation.
