The county's unemployment rate showed a 0.5 percentage point spike in unemployment over the month of November, increasing from 4.6 percent in October to 5.1 percent in November.

    Kinston and Lenoir County have been working since Tuesday to prepare for the first winter snow storm to hit Eastern North Carolina.  With the National Weather Service predicting frigid temperatures in the teens and 4 to 6 inches of snow in Lenoir County overnight Wednesday, emergency personnel are on standby and county schools are closing at 11:30 a.m.  Roger Dail, Lenoir County emergency manager, said his office was closely monitoring the storm.

    The motivation to explore ways to work together was driving by the desire from both elected bodies to find cost efficiencies in both and provide better service to citizens.  County commissioners and city council members met at the Woodman Community Center with Rick Morse and Carl Stenberg of the UNC School of Government to look at ways departments might share services between the city and county.  “Everybody thought it would be a cold day in hell before these two boards came together,” said Craig Hill, chairman of Lenoir County Commissioners.  Tony Sears, Kinston city manager, said what brought the two boards together was last year's property tax revaluation that lower much of the property value in the city, which meant lost revenue for the city and county.

    Chances of snow in Lenoir County and Eastern North Carolina through Wednesday night continues to increase as a low pressure system moves up the coast.  The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City on Tuesday morning was predicting 2-3 inches of snow could blanket Kinston and Snow Hill areas Wednesday night into Thursday morning.  Eastern North Carolina is under a winter storm watch where there is potential for 1 to 4 inches of snow through most of the area with higher amounts accumulating away from the coast.

    Lenoir County Sheriff's criminal investigations detectives arrested Leslie Ray Stroud IV Dec. 22 at his residence at 2582 N.C. 11 South and charged him with statutory rape of a child less than 15 years old.  According to the Sheriff's Office, Stroud was also charged Thursday with taking indecent liberties with a child.

    Although a freezing rain expected for Lenoir County Wednesday did not occur, there is still the possibility of wintery weather moving in overnight Thursday, weather officials say.  Bel Melendez, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, Newport/Morehead City, said temperatures did not fall below 32 degrees Wednesday morning in Lenoir County and most of the eastern areas where freezing rain was predicted.  “Thursday will mainly be cold and dry, reinforcing an Artic high moving in from the north and northwest,” Melendez said. “This next cold air mass will be in the low to mid 30s.
