    A standoff Friday morning forced the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department to lock down the county courthouse for about an hour and block all streets leading to it. This started around 9:15 a.m. when a man with a gun inside a car outside the courthouse was threatening to harm himself and to harm law enforcement officers.

    The Lawrence County Angel Tree will be set up in the lobby of the Lawrence County Courthouse for second-graders from Walnut Ridge and Hoxie to decorate at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2. Names can be taken from the tree from Dec. 3-12, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and all gifts must be returned by Dec. 15. The gifts will be distributed on Dec. 18. The courthouse will be open for people to view the tree and select angels on Tuesday night, Dec. 2, before and after the Walnut Ridge Christmas parade. County Clerk Tina Stowers, a member of the Angel Tree Committee, said in addition to taking angels from the tree there are other ways individuals can support the project.
