    A new drone Kossuth County purchased with a grant this spring helped authorities rescue a man and his granddaughter after their boat became hung up on a logjam on the Upper Des Moines River earlier this month. The Mason City Globe Gazette reported that the remote-control aircraft helped authorities quickly locate Thomas Fitzpatrick of Algona and his granddaughter on July 13. Sheriff's Deputy Josh Missman said he had recently finished training on flying the drone before the rescue.

    A drone and a lot of teamwork rescued two stranded boaters Wednesday night on the East Fork of the Des Moines River. Kossuth County Emergency Management says Thomas Fitzpatrick and his 10-year-old granddaughter had been dropped off at the Plum Creek Dam, north of Algona, at about 5:30 pm and were planning to meet up with family a few hours later at the Veteran's Park boat ramp.
