National Grid spokeswoman Virginia J. Limmiatis said 16,000 customers in south Jefferson County, along Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, temporarily lost power at about 11:30 p.m. Monday night, and another 15,000 homes lost power for only for a short period.

    Jordan E. Abbott, 28, of 7678 State Route 289, Ellisburg, was charged at 3:26 a.m. Sunday by Jefferson County sheriff's deputies on State Route 178 in Adams with driving while intoxicated. An automated weather station in Philadelphia, a Jefferson County town about 20 miles southeast of Alexandria Bay, recorded 34 below zero about 6 a.m. As of noon, the National Weather Service's official list of high and low temperatures says that the coldest place was Hibbing/Chisholm, Minnesota, at 32 below.

As a requirement, garbage is now collected in clear plastic bags to ensure they're free of recyclables, and all recyclables are shipped to Syracuse instead of to the Jefferson County transfer station in Pamelia.
