    Jefferson County sheriff's deputies responded to the facility - Oak Grove Resources - in the 8300 block of Taylor's Ferry Road at 11 a.m. to investigate a report of an adult male injured by mining equipment, according to a sheriff's office press release issued late Friday. Deputies learned the victim, whose name hasn't been released, was conducting maintenance on a piece of equipment when it collapsed on him.

    In an order filed on Thursday evening, Jefferson County Circuit Judge Michael Graffeo ordered the city of Birmingham to award a contract to demolish the 10-story, 87-year-old building by Feb. 10, 2017 and to have the demolition completed by April 28, 2017. Graffeo further ordered the city of Birmingham to repair or repave damaged sections of Avenue E and 19th Street running along the building; repair and install new sidewalks adjacent to the building and install one or more streetlights along the sidewalks and install grass and landscape the lot as "an attractive greenspace."

    Testimony began Thursday in a federal trial to determine whether Gardendale should be allowed to break away from Jefferson County schools and form its own system. Attorneys for Gardendale are trying to show that the new school system would maintain its diversity and live up to the requirements under a 1971 desegregation order that controls the Jefferson County system and that it wouldn't affect the county school system from being able to live up to that same order.

Washington, a Democrat, got 36,744 votes, or 50.18 percent, and Republican Bill Veitch, who currently holds the district attorney's job, got 36,445 votes, or 49.77 percent, according to Jefferson County Probate Judge Alan King.
