    Winning a third straight 52nd District Tournament championship didn't look especially promising for the Harlan Lady Dragons when the season began in August with seven seniors, including six starters, gone from last year's squad. Harlan was able to rebuild on the run, overcoming losing streaks early in the season and again late in the year, to capture another district title, sweeping past Middlesboro on Monday and then dispatching Harlan County 25-17, 25-22 and 25-19 in the championship game Tuesday at Bell County High School.

    Eight years after her death, the life of former Southeast Community College professor and community advocate Gayle Lawson was honored on Monday in a way that many of her friends and family agreed was perfectly fitting. Dozens of Harlan County residents and Kentucky Department of Transportation employees were on hand for a ceremony on a new section of U.S. 119 in Letcher County, two miles from the Harlan County line, where a bridge that will be a key part of the seven-mile section of the road scheduled to open Dec. 1 was dedicated in Lawson's name.
