    While beautiful weather beckoned, it was the perfect storm of circumstances for Volusia and Flagler county lifeguards this holiday weekend with ocean rip currents at their worst, according to one captain, and record crowds flocking to the beach. Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue officers scrambled Memorial Day Sunday and Monday to rescue more than 400 beachgoers who suddenly found themselves in dire straits as they tried to struggle in strong currents.

    Daytona Beach's 1 percent growth rate over the past year may not sound like much to crow about, but it's the best year-to-year population gain the place has enjoyed since the 1990s. The U.S. Census Bureau released city population estimates last week and the picture they painted showed Volusia and Flagler counties picking up new people again after the slowdown of the recession.

People packed nearly every inch around Rockefeller Gardens on the east bank of the Halifax River on Monday morning, including veterans wearing pins, stripes and patches that told part of their stories, and children of veterans carrying ribbons, medals and photos - all they had left of their military parents.
