    A Newark couple was arrested this week and charged with animal cruelty for starving a 6-month-old pit bull puppy at their apartment, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office alleged Friday Jose E. Martinez, 29, and his girlfriend Porchia Williams, 27, both of Newark, allegedly did not feed the dog on a regular basis and forced him to remain in his cage which was filled with urine and fecal matter, a prosecutor's office release stated. The "emaciated" dog was found with urine burns on his tail, hindquarters and paws, weighed only 8.5 pounds, was starving and had pressure sores on its body, according to Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Michele Miller.

    Police are searching for a Montclair man accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death in the township earlier this month, authorities said Thursday. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office, in a statement, said Kenneth Jones, no age given, has been charged with murder and weapons offenses in the death of Tameeka Johnson, 41. Johnson was found dead in the couple's home on Greenwood Avenue on Nov. 12, the prosecutor's office said.
