    Trial was set in a conference Tuesday for Feb. 2, 2017, in a lawsuit against Emmet County for the alleged wrongful death of Joshua Cohrs while Cohrs was held in the county jail early in 2014. Therese Cohrs, along with her son's estate, filed a lawsuit in Emmet County Court against the county, claiming lifelong damages from the officials' alleged lack of care when Joshua was held in the jail from Jan. 19-21, 2014.

    A number of farmers across the state of Iowa missed their cash rent payments March 1, with some trying to renegotiate their contracts, and others going to the bank to find the banks would not extend the necessary credit this year. A look at the Iowa State University Extension's Cash Rental Rates survey for Emmet County over the past 30 years reveals that rents have ranged from a low of $87, in 1987 during the height of the farm crisis, to a high of $245 in 2013, with a small tumble in the last two years to $223 in 2015.
