    Two possibly dangerous open mine shafts in the Upper Peninsula have been covered with snug-fitting "bat gates" that will allow the little creatures to keep flying in and out, while keeping out nosy humans. The $8,000 project was completed as part of a Michigan Department of Natural Resources effort to protect bats who hibernate in Northern Michigan, including the Keel Ridge mine area in Dickinson County, according to the Associated Press and the Iron Mountain Daily News.

    The town of Chapman, Kansas, torn apart by a tornado in 2008, has escaped a repeat, but as many as 25 nearby homes have been damaged or destroyed. The National Weather says a large tornado formed just after 7 p.m. near the Ottawa County community of Niles and stayed on the ground continuously for the next hour and a half, coming within a mile of Chapman, in Dickinson County.
