    Today, the Director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced that except for one area within Humboldt County, the California coast is open for recreational Dungeness crab season, and that commercial fishing will open in the same area on May 12. “This latest opening is good news and will benefit hundreds of families and the local economies in Del Norte and Humboldt counties, but this opening comes extremely late in the season,” said Senator Mike McGuire.

    It'll be nine days until commercial crab fishing begins off the coast of California, except for some waters off of Humboldt County. Almost six months after crab season usually begins the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Monday evening that more areas are open for recreational Dungeness crab fishing and commercial crabbing in those areas begins May 12. According to a CDFW press release, recreational Dungeness crab fishing is open north of the southern boundary line of Reading Rock State Marine Conservation Area near Redwood Creek west of Orick.

Following the latest batch of test results last week, Lauren Zeise, acting director of the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, cited an “emergency situation” after toxicity levels of clams came in over five times the allowable limit.
