    SYCAMORE – Convicted child murderer Jack McCullough wants another chance to prove his innocence, claiming that his 2012 trial and subsequent appeal were tainted by prosecutors' misconduct and that a new witness will support his alibi. In a petition filed June 19 in DeKalb County Circuit Court, McCullough writes that Janice Edwards, his girlfriend at the time, would testify that she received a collect call from him at 7 p.m. from Rockford on Dec. 3, 1957, the day 7-year-old Maria Ridulph disappeared, saying that he'd be late for their date.

    The Civil War Memorial in front of the DeKalb County Courthouse in Sycamore was re-dedicated on Aug. 15. The Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War E. F. Dutton Camp 49 out of Sycamore raised $10,000 to replace the copper weapons on the monument, which have been stolen over the years. The monument was erected in 1896 and dedicated in 1897.

    Just before midnight Saturday, Richard Clayton Baxter, 33, fled from Watertown police after he was pulled over by a Watertown officer for a possible DUI, according to a report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, which ultimately made the arrest. The report states Baxter fled to Interstate 40, traveling east through Wilson, Smith and into Putnam County where he exited I-40 at Silver Point onto Highway 56 and was stopped in DeKalb County after spike strips were deployed.

    The man accused in the fatal stabbing of his girlfriend in February is now facing a more serious charge in a DeKalb County courtroom. The DeKalb County Grand Jury on Monday indicted 42 year old Anthony Tyrone Crews on a charge of first degree murder in the death of 28 year old Ashley Bain, whose body was found lying on the floor of a bedroom at the home she and Crews shared at 3870 Cookeville Highway, Smithville on Thursday afternoon, February 5. At the time of his arrest on the evening of the stabbing, Crews had been charged with second degree murder.
