    Memphis-based International Paper announced Tuesday that it will invest $135 million in its Riegelwood plant in Columbus County in order to convert the facility to a fluff and soft production operation, reports the Star-News in Wilmington . "However, based on what we know today, there will be no impact to anyone's job at the Riegelwood Mill this year as a result of the planned conversion," said mill manager Floyd Whitmire in a statement.

    An engine fire on a truck carrying boxes of frozen chickens shut down portions of U.S. 74/76 in Leland on Monday afternoon, March 30. No one was injured. Brunswick County Fire Marshal Scott Garner said the driver of the tractor-trailer was headed east about a mile from Columbus County when he smelled smoke and pulled onto a dirt logging road field at 2:20 p.m. The eastbound lane was shut down as fire and emergency crews arrived at the scene.
