    June 28--FOLKSTON, GA-- A wildfire that consumed more than 152,000 acres in and around the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge has been extinguished thanks to more than 10 inches of rain the past two weeks. Sarah Wyatt, a refuge ranger, said a limited number of crew members assigned to the fire remain at the 438,000-acre refuge to repair roads torn up by heavy equipment used to battle the fire, which was sparked by lightning April 6. At its peak, more than 1,000 wildland firefighters from across the country battled to contain the flames within the boundaries of the wildlife refuge and adjoining forests in North Florida.

The total number of personnel was at 438 on Tuesday when the fire turned two months old and less than half the number when the fire was at its most dangerous in early May. Between May 6 and 9, the fire, pushed by strong, dry winds, jumped containment, prompted evacuation orders for the southern half of Charlton County and raced rapidly through private timber land.
