    An Edison Middle School student who police say had a BB gun in his waistband and a ski mask covering his face Sunday at a Champaign apartment complex is in detention. Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz said she filed a petition to hold the 13-year-old boy in contempt of court for his actions and also sent a letter to Champaign Police Chief Anthony Cobb, commending Officer Corey Phenicie and three others for defusing a potentially dangerous situation without anyone being hurt.

    The University of Illinois Police Department is seeking the public's help in its investigation into an assault that took place in Champaign early Sunday morning. Police say the incident happened in the 700 block of South Sixth Street at about 1:14 a.m. Authorities say the victim was walking northbound when an unknown individual ran up from behind and struck the individual in the back of the head, causing the victim to fall to the ground and lose consciousness.

    In 1915, in what is claimed by many to be the most brutal and inexcusable murder in the history of Champaign County, Urbana resident Harry Slade killed his 11-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son and severely wounded a turnkey at the county jail who was attempting to arrest him. Slade was on one of his periodic drunks and was threatening his family.

State's Attorney Julia Rietz told The News-Gazette late Friday afternoon that the Champaign Police Department had agreed to turn over the documents but insisted that she obtain a subpoena for them.

On Thursday morning, the METCAD policy board - made of leaders from Champaign, Urbana, Rantoul, Champaign County and the University of Illinois - voted 4-1 to allow Urbana to make five annual payments of $19,405.86 with a 1 percent interest rate, starting this fiscal year, which began in July.

Authorities say Toya Frazier, 45, was found by officers in her cell at the Satellite Jail on Lierman Avenue just after 5:00 p.m. Officers immediately began CPR and received further assistance from the Urbana Fire Department.
