    The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office and Bluffton Township Fire District are investigating a "suspicious fire" after some of the district's vehicles - a "scrap" small passenger vehicle, bus and mid-size recreational vehicle used for training purposes - were reported burning. Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the fire on Ulmer Road in Bluffton around 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

    The price of keeping warm in a cold snap is catching up with some Beaufort County residents who have been unpleasantly surprised by what they say are much higher than usual power bills from late December/early January. Michael Taylor of Bluffton opened his most recent Palmetto Electric bill to find that it had almost tripled from the previous month, going from $148 to $426.

    Two instances of what appear to be identity theft resulting in fraudulent credit card charges made to a well-known women's fashion retailer have been reported in Beaufort County this week, according to Beaufort County Sheriff's Office reports. Sheriff's deputies spoke Wednesday morning with two people - one in Bluffton, one on Hilton Head Island - who both reported credit card accounts had been opened without their knowledge with Forever 21 , and that they'd been charged hundreds of dollars.
