    Democratic challenger Brownie Futrell has raised more than $100,000 since the beginning of the year in his bid to unseat Republican state Sen. Bill Cook - more than four times as much as the incumbent raised during the same period. Campaign filings with the N.C. Board of Elections the first week of July show Futrell, a retired newspaper publisher from Beaufort County, having raised a total of $102,801 since Jan. 1, a majority of it - $71,091 - in the second quarter of the year that ended June 30. Cook's campaign filing with the elections board filed the same week shows him raising $23,641 since the beginning of the year, $13,589 of it in the second quarter.

    The advisory was lifted because water testing shows that bacteria levels have dropped to within the state's and Environmental Protection Agency's standards set for swimming and water play. The advisory was posted at the public access to Pantego Creek at the intersection of East Main and Tooley streets in Belhaven on June 30. This site showed a monthly average of the bacteria enterococci above the EPA-mandated level of 35 enterococci per 100 milliliters of water, the standard for high-use sites.
