    With increased enrollment at Ferrum College and the rapid growth of surrounding businesses over the years, changes are planned to deal with increased foot traffic and public safety alongside the Shively Bridge on Route 40. That bridge is too narrow to provide a safe walking lane for pedestrians who must cross it to reach several businesses, county officials say, so a pedestrian bridge will be built next to it. The project is projected to cost $1.2 million, and three years ago Franklin County was awarded Virginia Department of Transportation revenue-sharing funding for the Ferrum Pedestrian Bridge project.
