    More than three-fifths of registered voters in North Carolina disagree that businesses should be allowed to refuse services to people who are gay or lesbian if homosexuality violates the business owners' religious beliefs, according to the latest Elon University Poll. Saying businesses should have that right were 51 percent of Republicans, 32 percent of independents and 18 percent of Democrats, as well as 39 percent of men, 27 percent of women, 36 percent of whites, 20 percent of blacks, and 20 percent of respondents age 18 to 30. The latest Elon University Poll comes as state lawmakers withdraw a bill that would have given such rights to business owners.
