    Ninety years ago, the small hamlet of Yaphank in Long Island was a Nazi enclave in New York state, with a nearby pro-Nazi summer camp and rules restricting home ownership to Germans. Shockingly, those home ownership rules remained officially in place until this week, when New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman reached a settlement with the non-profit that owns the homes there, called the German American Settlement League.

    New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office said Wednesday that it settled with the German American Settlement League in Yaphank, Long Island, over what prosecutors called racially discriminatory housing practices. The League's 40-acre community, a former Nazi summer camp called Siegfried Park, had only allowed people "primarily of German extraction" to own homes or be members.

    May 16, 2017 - The Suffolk County Department of Health Services received notice on April 26, 2017, that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has declared the Suffolk County Firematics Training Facility, located at 676 Pine St. in Yaphank , a Class 2 Superfund Site. The site, which has served as Suffolk County's training facility for the volunteer fire service since 1959, used aqueous film forming foam in training activities until May 2016, when the county was notified that chemicals in the foam had been classified as hazardous substances by New York State.
